Protecting the Environment

At ConocoPhillips we identify and assess all environmental issues associated with our activities, and develop management strategies to minimise potential impacts.
We systematically integrate environmental management practices into new and existing business processes, and regularly assess our performance to ensure we continue to implement appropriate environmental management measures.
Climate Change & Energy Efficiency
We recognise that human activity, including the burning of fossil fuels, is a contributor to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere, which can lead to adverse changes in global climate. For ConocoPhillips, the management of greenhouse gas emissions represents the twin challenges of taking action on climate change whilst continuing to deliver adequate and reliable supplies of energy.

Emissions Reduction
We continue to reduce airborne emissions from operations where these may impact on the environment. We track emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). Where feasible, we employ emissions reduction technologies such as NOx reduction water injection for the refrigeration turbines at our Darwin LNG plant.
Water Management
We understand the need to manage our freshwater use responsibly. While access to adequate and safe water is a global issue, the impacts on freshwater supply and water quality are often local in nature. Building local awareness, skills and sustainable practices at the locations in which we operate is crucial to our commitment to responsible water management.
Biodiversity
ConocoPhillips recognises the importance of biodiversity in maintaining ecosystem health as a vital factor in human wellbeing. Protecting plant and animal species and ecosystems is an essential component of our health, safety, and environmental commitment wherever we operate.

Our approach to waste management is based on a simple set of priorities aimed at eliminating waste wherever possible.

Where the above is not possible, we dispose of waste safely and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. ConocoPhillips’ operations only use commercial waste contractors that meet our requirements for operational integrity, have environmental management processes in place, implement monitoring controls, and comply with all relevant legislation.
Project Environmental Assessment
ConocoPhillips undertakes environmental assessments at different stages of each project’s development lifecycle, from early exploration through to construction and operations. These assessments are linked to the progress of each project along the development timeline. As a project becomes increasingly well defined, the level of assessment also becomes increasingly detailed and targeted.
Australia Pacific LNG
As the downstream partner in the Australia Pacific LNG project, ConocoPhillips has contributed to development of the project’s comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment to identify and manage any associated environmental impacts.

Barossa
The OPP process is conducted and regulated by the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) and includes opportunity for interested members of the public to comment on the project during its early development stage.
Greater Poseidon
In partnership with Origin Energy and PetroChina, ConocoPhillips is considering a number of options for extracting and developing the Greater Poseidon gas resources located 480 km north of Broome, Western Australia.
As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental protection, a marine environmental baseline studies program was undertaken in the Greater Poseidon field and surrounds. In addition to informing engineering studies, these studies have helped enhance the overall scientific fabric of the Browse Basin region.
Production Operations Environmental Management
Once a project starts production, there are facility-specific environmental management processes in place.
Darwin LNG
The Darwin LNG facility at Wickham Point has been operating since 2006. It currently operates under the Environment Protection License 217 (EPL).
The NT Environmental Protection Agency issue the EPL to manage air emissions, wastewater and waste.
The Operations Environmental Management Plan (OEMP) addresses EPL implementation requirements and other matters outside the scope of the EPL.
Bayu-Undan
An Operations Phase Environmental Management Plan is in place for the Bayu-Undan Field Operations. The plan is approved by the Joint Petroleum Development Area Designated Authority, and is subject to periodic review and update.
